Su Chen: Interim Board Chair

Su Chen who was appointed as Board Chair on April 13, 2023, is now Interim Board Chair of the transition Board of The Urban League Of Long Island Board of Directors.  Su Is also National Urban League President of National Council of Board Chairs and now a member of the National Urban League of  Trustees.  ‘Su will oversee the recruitment of the new Transition Board of Directors. As Co-Owner of TeamLogic IT, an Information Technology Company, CEO of The Speak Hope Foundation. A mental Health non-for profit and Owner of and Interior Design and Real Estate Firm. Su brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role. Su has and demonstrates exceptional leadership skills and a deep understanding of the organization’s mission and values.  Having a strong faith in God. Su’s Husband Darryl is a NYPD Police Officer for 30 years. Su comes from a Military family. Where the honor code and giving your word is the firm foundation, she builds her life on. Su will play a vital role in Revitalize and Restructure the Urban League of Long Island. She’s looking forward to building strong community relationships.

Carla Simpson: Interim Secretary

Former Board member Carla Simpson has been appointed Interim Secretary to the new Transition Board of Directors. Carla has spent most of her career in the finance industry and Real Estate sector, garnering experience in large financial institutions and law firms. Carla also has wide and varied experience in business and community development, property management and capital raising. We are excited to roll out many housing programs with topics including but not limited to being a first-time home buyer, maintaining your home and obtaining assistance with mortgage modifications and foreclosure.

Isaiah Grigg: Board Member

Newly appointed Transition Board member Isaiah is Founder of MusicBreeds Isaiah always had a love and joy for music from a young man. Not wanting any child to go without music. MusiceBreeds has developed the building blocks of having good habits and gives students the skills needed to be successful in life. To inspire empower and mentor young musicians from disadvantaged communities by supporting their personal and professional development.

Jude Massillon

Newly appointed Transition Board Member. Jude has had much success with Energice a frozen electrolyte popsicle that gives athletic performance and recovery a whole new meaning. Jude has had the pleasure of training Olympic Athletes, NFL players, High School and College Athletes. Working closely with students to know the resources available for college. Never wanting a student not to attend college due to the application process. We're looking forward to having several educational series How to help students fulfill their goals and dreams.

Stacie Murray

Newly appointed Transition Board Member Quality Assurance Training Manager with a career span of 20+ years working in the non-profit and for-profit sectors. Working with individuals with intellectual and development disabilities. Stacie specializing in policy and procedure development, ISO regulatory compliance, fiscal and budgetary management, audit compliance oversight, training facilitation, and incident and complaint investigations. Stacie holds a master's degree in psychology. Stacie is also an entrepreneur, the mother of two amazing children and owner of Brooke's Hair and Body Butter LLC.

Don Sinkfield

Newly appointed Transition Board Member Don is a mental health counselor and believes that the role of an effective therapist is based on the spiritual relationship with the client recognizing that healing is a natural process in which the therapist assists the client in reaching harmony with their mind, body and soul. Once one is harmonious, we are “at peace” whether ot not the external forces surrounding them are fragmented.

Nicole Jones

Newly appointed Interim President/CEO Nicole is a seasoned executive with over a decade of experience as an Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry lead instructor. In addition to working in that capacity Nicole has spent equal time with experience in Corporate America as a National Account and Business Development Director with supervisory duties responsible for managing revenues totaling over $15 million U.S.D. collectively. Integrating her statistical savvy to interpret and share data in innovative ways. Nicole has consistently negotiated successful and lucrative business contracts and grants by offering a holistic approach toward improving corporate cultural performance driven by collaborative partnerships among all stakeholders. Helping to create equity for disenfranchised populations so they may go and positively change the world. Nicole lives on Long Island with her Husband and two daughters.

Lance Ware has been in Financial Services executive with 25+ years of Banking experience in Regulatory Reporting, Capital Markets, Financial Regulation and Services, Risk Management, Internal Audit and Compliance. Lance is skilled in creating and fostering solid relationships with regulatory agencies, banking personnel, industry peers and working groups. Highly capable of strategic thinking and collaborating with executive business partners ensuring the most effective risk/reward balance for their respective organizations.

Cherice Vanderhall

Counsel, Board of Directors

Cherice is the youngest child and only daughter of the late Jesse W. Vanderhall and Dorothy M. Vanderhall. Before her formal training she was educated at home by values steeped in southern roots and the A.M.E. Zion church. Her lessons learned at home proved to be the most valuable “classes” she would ever take and formed the foundation for which she would become an attorney and community advocate. Cherice currently serves as the Counsel to the Receiver of Taxes for the Town of Hempstead and practices as a sole practitioner in the areas of family and matrimonial law, and employment discrimination. Cherice gained invaluable legal experience in all areas of complex civil litigation including commercial and employment disputes, professional liability, insurance defense, wills, trust, sand estates, labor and employment, and family law. She is a tough litigator who has helped clients to achieve successful resolutions in race, age, gender, and religious discrimination cases, sexual harassment, hostile work environment, wrongful termination, as well as wage and hour violations. In Family Court she considers a parental right to be a civil right and has reached many successful resolutions on behalf of parents, and their children, since her fight always included what is in the child’s best interests. Cherice thrives in competitive environments and litigates with uncompromising dedication, patience, and a relentless desire to achieve justice on behalf of her clients. Cherice graduated from Touro Law Center in 2009, cum laude, where she was the Notes and Comments Editor of the International Law Review and a CALI Excellence Award recipient. In law school she studied International Human Rights Law in Xiamen, China and was the recipient of the prestigious Thurgood Marshall Fellowship from the New York City Bar Association where she worked for the City Bar Justice Center’s Elder Law Project. Before entering law school and graduating from the University at Albany where she obtained a B.A. in Political Science and Africana Studies, and a M.A. in Africana Studies with a concentration in West African History, Cherice worked as a labor union organizer for 1199/SEIU. She studied West African History, Culture, and Politics at the University of Ghana at Legon in Accra, Ghana in 2001 and 2002, and cites her extensive travel and embrace of different cultures, and ability to organize and mobilize groups as one of her greatest assets. Cherice is committed to community and the future of the young people who will be tomorrow’s leaders. On occasion, she serves as a Panelist or Guest Lecturer for both schools and community events speaking on various legal and community issues. Cherice has been featured on Long Island News 12 Diverse Long Island, served as a mentor at Turtle Hook Middle School, and serves as a volunteer track coach for the Uniondale H.S. Girls Track and Field team. Cherice serves as president of the Nassau County Women’s Bar Association, the co-executive director of the Amistad Long Island Black Bar Association and is a member of a number of bar associations including the National Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, and Nassau County Bar Association. She is also member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, LI Chapter, the NAACP, National Council of Negro Women, the Board of Directors for Nassau Suffolk Law Services, and a member of the Jackson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church Board of Trustees.

Dennis Bulger

Dennis has experience in the Real Estate Sector working at two different Long Island Law Firms.  Prior to working in the private sector,  Dennis was a program supervisor at a Non-Profit Organization specializing in adults recovering from mental illness.  Dennis has extensive expertise in the legal aspects of Real Estate, as well as Estate Planning.  Dennis is a dedicated legal advocate who prioritizes in  developing connections that will benefit his clients for life.  Dennis recently passed the bar exam, and expects to be admitted in 2024.   Due to his friendly disposition, Dennis is respected by his peers and adored by his clients.  When he is not  navigating clients through complicated life events, Dennis is a husband and full time dog dad. Dennis enjoys mediation, nutrition, and physical exercise.

Dr. Pepper Bonay-Martin

Board Member. Born and raised in the Bronx and later moving to Westchester County, where she spent most of her adult life, Pepper Bonay-Martin is now a resident of Nassau County with her husband Sydney. She is a former high school assistant principal, middle school principal, site supervisor for Grand Canyon University, an ordained minister, pastor, author, and sought-after keynote speaker at a variety of events. Her love of family and commitment to community was borne in the church where she was reared and continued during a 15-year career spent educating and helping children, as a certified teacher, school counselor, and school administrator in the New York City Public Schools system. She is extremely passionate about empowering women who have overcome extreme pain from their past. Her own experiences and passion moved her to start Women Intended For Excellence (WIFE) Inc., an organization designed to primarily, but not exclusively, assist women who function below their potential as a result of experiencing past traumatic events in their lives and help them fulfill their life’s purpose. As CEO of WIFE Inc., she strives to design SEL strategies to help women overcome trauma and the obstacles they create that act as barriers to achieving ultimate success and fulfillment. In addition, we educate the men in the lives of these women on how they help remove these barriers without causing further trauma. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in business management from St. John’s University and three Masters’ Degrees in education, school counseling, and school administration from Long Island University C.W. Post. She currently has a Doctorate in Ministry and is now pursuing a second doctorate in educational leadership. Launching Moore National FS in Valley Stream in 2018, Dwayne took a decisive step towards realizing the quintessential American dream. Michael Todisco

Michael Todisco, President of Apprenticeship Connections & Consulting Corp. (“Apprenticeship Connections”), has intimate knowledge and first-hand experience with NYDOL (New York Department of Labor) registered apprenticeship programs.  Over the past 10 years, he has helped numerous organizations become a sponsor, along with overseeing the active development and maintenance of these programs.  In addition, for the past 4 years, he created the first manufacturing group sponsorship registered apprenticeship program on Long Island, as well as drafting new trades – Fitness Instructor, Bench Jeweler Production, along with others currently in discussion. He has extensive experience with the policies and procedures, along with strong local relationships with the DOL and educational institutions to meet the related instruction requirements to keep a program in good standing. Since joining Jovia Financial Credit Union in 2008, Raymond Schwetz has become a trusted resource and a valued and respected member of the Jovia family, the community, and the commercial banking industry. Ray currently serves as Assistant Vice President of Business Banking, where he applies a wealth of expertise gained over 30 years in financial services, commercial banking, and community outreach in managing all aspects of Jovia’s Business Banking Unit. Prior to being promoted to his current position, Ray was the Community Relations Director, and was originally hired to promote business development for Jovia. Terri Arnold-McKenzie, M.S., MBA is an expert in entrepreneurship, supplier diversity, and building successful capacity building programs focused on diverse entrepreneurs. In her current role, Terri is the Senior Program Manager of Customer and Community Management for National Grid; leading The Grid Collective program, Faith-Based outreach and engagement, and Environmental Justice & Social Equity and Small Business Tech programming. She developed and managed the Ascend Long Island program at Hofstra University. She is also a consultant specializing in Small Business Development, and MWBE Compliance and Procurement. She holds an MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management, a Master of Science degree in Integrated Marketing Communications from Roosevelt University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Northern Illinois University.
